With advances in biometric technology troops in Afghanistan are collecting biological data from Afghans they come across. It's controversial but means the difficulty of identifying opponents nested amongst civilians is no longer so difficult.. Major Douglas Baker is in charge of collecting biometric data on Afghani civilians. He'd like us to believe he wants the data for civilian uses; "In days past it was how many bad guys are here. Now it's how many people live in a village and what do they do". But it's clear the main use of the retina scans and fingerprints is to to provide match data against suspected terrorists. If it's an invasion of the privacy of the innocent the Afghans don't seem to notice and the US Army is adamant it's a qualified means to an end. "If we don't get these guys to stand on their feet it's going to happen again". [More] [Less]
