SAIC Announces the Biometric Research Competition Winner

McLEAN, Va. - Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) [NYSE: SAI] today announced that Clement Creusot, a graduate student from the University of York in the United Kingdom, has won the Biometric Research Competition hosted by the University of Kent, United Kingdom (UK), the UK Biometrics Institute, and sponsored by SAIC. The goal of the competition was to uncover potentially influential concepts in biometrics from up-and-coming UK researchers pursuing their doctorate degree in the field. Creusot, a Marie Curie doctoral fellow at the University of York, was selected for his paper entitled “Landmark Labeling for 3-D Faces” which focuses on new techniques for automatic face landmarking and recognition. As the winner, he will visit SAIC’s headquarters in McLean, Va. to present his winning project to SAIC leadership. He will also participate with SAIC in the 2010 Biometrics Consortium Conference and Biometric Technology Expo, held September 21- 23 in Tampa, Fla.
The competition’s entries were judged on technical quality and novelty; the likely impact on the field of biometrics; and potential for commercialization. Judges selected eight papers for presentation during a workshop at the University of Kent on July 15. Research topics selected for presentation ranged from the processing of iris biometric samples, to behavioral authentication using computer games, to extracting discriminative information.

Schools that participated in the competition included: University of Cambridge; University of Kent; University of Portsmouth; University of Southampton; University of York and the University of Surrey. The judging panel included representatives from government, academia, and industry. Judges included representatives from the University of Kent, Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) Services, Smart Sensors, UK Trade & Investment, and SAIC.

“The Biometric Research Competition was successful in uncovering some great ideas by young researchers,” said Harry Helmich, SAIC vice president and division manager. “We received many innovative entries, and were pleased to sponsor this competition which challenged students to break new ground in biometrics.”

SAIC previously signed an agreement with the University of Kent on behalf of the United Kingdom Biometrics Institute (UKBI) to collaborate on biometric and identity projects in 2006. Fostered by efforts of the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), the agreement aims to maximize cooperation from academia, industry and government in collaborative research and development.
