Logical Access Control

Computers and laptops are often protected using passwords. But is this a full-proof security method. Passwords and other keys used to login to a computer can be stolen, making password management a difficult practice. However, biometrics is the latest buzzword, which can serve the solution to this problem, by offering a solution in the form of biometric logical access. Various devices like fingerprint reader are integrated with keyboards mouse or in the form of stand alone applications to allow only authorized user to access the computers.

Passwords and Biometric Templates Combined
Biometrics logical access doesn’t completely eliminate the use of passwords to make a computer login. In fact, it combines biometric templates with passwords to allow the computers to be used by authorized users only. Apart from providing password, a user has to authorize his login using live biometric sample. For this, he is required to place his fingers on the fingerprint reader, which scans and match the live sample with pre-stored one. The user is authorized when both, password and biometric samples, are matched to the assigned values.

How Does It Work
First of all, the fingerprint samples collected from different users are converted into binary form. After that, various encryption algorithms completely encode the data to a complex form. Finally, this data is stored in the form of biometric templates. The good thing about this whole procedure is that it can’t be reversed even by proficient hackers.

How Does It Help

  • Biometric allows the authorized users to login to the computer.
  • No other person can access the computer, as there will be no match between biometric templates and live samples.
  • Password protected websites and various web applications will also require biometric authorization, thereby adding value to the security.
  • Network resources are also password protected and thus, only authorized users will be able to access them.
  • Even if the passwords are stolen, you can relax about your computer being accessed by unauthorized user. Nobody can duplicate your biometric data and this is the beauty of biometric logical access.

A fingerprint reader can entertain your need to protect your computers against illegitimate access. With the existence of biometric technology in hand, you can cherish your experience of using a computer fearlessly.
