HIPAA & Heatthcare Biometric

After successfully establishing its reputation in various industries, biometric applications have been prepared to entertain sensitive security needs of healthcare industry. The existence of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is appreciable in benefiting patients during emergency situations. Further success is achieved by combining biometrics and HIPAA to create a full proof beneficial system in hospitals and clinics.

How Does Biometrics Facilitate Healthcare

  • Imagine the unauthorized access of expensive equipments installed in hospitals and medical institutes. Biometrics in healthcare can allow only authorized doctors and hospital staffs to use these equipments.
  • Similar is the case with drugs and various types of inventories, which can be stolen or misused by hospital visitors or even by the staff members. Biometric applications excel in this regard as well.
  • Patient records, medical histories and other legal documents also require protection from biometrics against misuse.
  • Payment through credit cards also calls for protection using this technology.
  • Provision of health insurances and legal documents associated with the process further strengthens the association between biometrics and HIPAA in health care industry.
  • Computers and hospital databases are other entities, which if protected using biometrics can provide peace of mind to the authorities.

Which Biometric Devices Are Used
For extending the benefits of biometrics in healthcare, a number of procedures and devices can be used. However, two of the most common biometric products used in this industry are:

  • Fingerprint scanner: Biometric fingerprint scanners are installed in reputed hospitals to provide high level of security and access control. From doctors, to general staff members, every individual is required to use these devices for biometrics identification.
  • Iris scanner: Sometimes, fingerprint scanners become ineligible for properly employing biometric applications in hospitals. The fear of infection due to multiple users touching these devices can make them appropriate for users. In such a situation, iris scanners, which are not required to be touched, are used as efficient biometric devices.

Biometrics in healthcare is no less than a breakthrough. Not only the bond between biometrics and HIPAA is strengthened by installing biometric products, overall security is what you get by adopting this technology.
