Proving its significant role in various fields, biometric security has found its existence in the US Department of Defense. Biometrics Task Force (BTF) is the leading organization of the department that works with a mission to integrate biometric capabilities with National Security Strategy and protect the nation from potential war and militancy threats. Among many functions of the organization, the Metrics and Evaluation branch works to:
- Conduct tests, simulations and experiments to choose right biometric-enabled war fighter technologies.
- Set standards for all biometric products and programs used in the field of national defense.
- Ensure interoperability of biometric systems with DoD Automated Biometric Identification System.
- Develop and implement biometric technology for combatant commands and services.
General Aims of BTF
The Biometrics Task Force works with following general security aims:
- To ensure homeland security against various types of militancy attacks.
- Protection of troops
- Development of preventive measures to identify the prospective threats from militants.
- Improvement of battlefield operation effectiveness of war fighter.
Current Research Areas
In the year 2009, the Biometrics Task Force has focused on two important research areas to enhance the biometric capabilities in the field of defense:
- Development of single biometric sensor is the first area of development being focused to capture multiple biometric inputs, including finger prints and vein patterns.
- Second current research area is the development of a multimodal sensor, capable of processing multiple biometric inputs for biometric analysis.
Development of Biometrics Standard
Another important role played by BTF is the participation in the development of national and international standards for biometrics. Through its special working groups and technical involvement, the organization has established coordination between the Department of Defense and biometric standards development organization.
Some of the adopted and implemented biometric standards facilitated by BTF include:
- DoD Electronic Biometric Transmission Specification
- Electronic Fingerprint Transmission Specification
- Finger Pattern Based Interchange Format
- Face Recognition Format for Data Interchange
- Biometric Data Interchange Formats – Signature/Sign Data and so on.
With development and implementation of biometrics in defense, the Biometrics Security Force is indulged in efforts to harness the emerging significance of biometrics in global security.
